Guide for Care at Home

Caring for seniors at home is the preferred option for both families and individuals. As a result, several options are now available from PIH Health.  Some are listed below.

Home Healthcare Agencies

Đài xổ số miền bắcHome healthcare agencies are licensed by the state and federally certified by the Medicare program and preferably accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the federal government.  These agencies provide skilled services such as nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapy, medical social work and home health aide assistants.  They also are able to administer IV medications and care for complex wounds.  Medicare and other forms of insurance cover these services as long as they are “skilled” in nature.  While most home healthcare agencies only provide skilled services, a few may provide personal attendants and companions.

Private Home Care Companies

Đài xổ số miền bắcThese private companies typically provide assistants on an hourly basis ranging from 2 to 24 hours per day with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, toileting, meal preparation, walking and protective supervision.  These services are not covered by Medicare.  Please check with your health plan or Medi-Cal for coverage.  Be sure to ask if the workers are bonded, insured and screened.

What Do I Ask When Considering a Private Home Care Company?

Senior Services at PIH Health recommends that you consider the following information before choosing an agency:

  • Licensure – Does your private home care company have a business license?
  • Consumer protection – Do they bond and insure for Workers Compensation?  Will they give you a copy of the Worker’s Compensation certificate?  Do they have general liability insurance at a minimum and $1/$2 million per occurrence?
  • References – Check with your local Better Business Bureau, your local Consumer Bureau or the State Attorney General’s office to check for complaints.

Coping with Caregiver Stress

Đài xổ số miền bắcAs a caregiver, the mixed emotions and stress you may feel come from both the specific situation—even if you’re caring for someone you love deeply—and your perception of it. Whether or not you volunteered for the caregiver role, factors that can contribute to stress include:

  • Your relationship with the person being cared for
  • Your ability to cope
  • The availability of support - friends and family
  • Financial concerns
  • Lack of communication
  • Loss of freedom
  • Lack of resources

This is known as caregiver burden and can affect your health.  Please discuss caregiver burden with your physician.

Current research shows a close connection between stress and health. That means it’s important to identify your personal strengths and build on them. Pay attention to your anger, fears, tears—and be sure to get enough sleep and eat nutritious meals each day. Identify what you can and cannot change. Then:

  • Accept, educate and let go
  • Take action to manage your stress
  • Manage your thoughts, beliefs and perceptions
  • Participate socially whenever possible
  • Get plenty of exercise and reward yourself
  • Practice positive self-talk
  • Give yourself some space to simply breathe

Choosing a Long-Term Care Facility

At some point, you may face the need—for yourself or a loved one—for the level of care found only in a nursing home or other long-term care facility. While the options may seem overwhelming, it helps to plan as far ahead as possible. Use these tips to help with your evaluation and decisions:

  • Make an accurate and honest assessment of your physical, financial and lifestyle needs; for assistance, consult a private geriatric case manager—a professional experienced in these types of assessments.
  • Visit as many facilities as you can to get a sense of your choices; consider how close the location is to those who will visit you
  • Select the top two or three facilities on your list; speak with residents; speak with staff; eat a meal at each site; visit at different times of the day and on weekends; you want to see what it’s like to be a resident
  • Ask for a copy of the resident agreement or contract and the services included for the monthly rate
  • Ask to review the licensing or certification inspection reports
  • Call the department of social services local long-term care division and ask about any complaints directed at these facilities on your list
  • Make an unannounced visit to the facility
  • Choose the facility that comes closest to your needs; remember, nothing is perfect
